Restaurant owners are worried a proposal to lower the legal blood-alcohol content could hurt restaurant sales without helping to save more lives. Reacting to the National Transportation Safety Board’s proposal to lower the legal limit to 0.05 percent from 0.08 percent, restaurant groups such as the National Restaurant Association have expressed concern the move would hurt the industry, which makes much of its profits off of alcohol, and punish responsible adults who enjoy a drink with their meal. In addition, the American Beverage Institute argues that a better idea is to tighten regulations on repeat drunk driving offenders. To help with the problem, many restaurants have long offered incentives for designated drivers and a menu of alcohol-free drinks. Whether the proposal becomes law or not, doing the same is a smart move for you.
